How to Play Waffle
Never played Waffle before? This guide walks you through everything from opening the grid to earning 5 stars. You'll have the basics down in about a minute.
What is Waffle?
Waffle is a word puzzle played on a grid shaped like a waffle. Six five-letter words interlock across the grid - three horizontal, three vertical. All the letters are already on the board when you start, just scrambled. Your job is to swap them into the correct positions.
Every tile on the board is color-coded, telling you how close that letter is to where it belongs. You get 15 swaps to solve the puzzle. A perfect solve takes 10 swaps. Here's what a typical starting grid looks like:
What the colors mean
Every tile is colored the moment the puzzle loads. The colors tell you whether each letter is in the right place, the right word, or the wrong word entirely.
Green - correct position
This letter is already where it belongs. Don't move it. Build your solution around these.
Yellow - right word, wrong spot
This letter is in the correct word (the same row or column word), but it needs to move to a different position within that word.
Gray - wrong word
This letter doesn't belong in its current word at all. It needs to move to a different row or column on the grid.
Step-by-step guide
Here's how to work through a Waffle puzzle from start to finish.
Scan the green tiles
Before you swap anything, look at which tiles are already green. These are your anchor points - letters that are already solved. A word with two or three green letters is much easier to figure out than one with none. Count the greens and start with the words that have the most.
Check the intersection tiles
Nine tiles sit at intersections where a horizontal word crosses a vertical word: the four corners, the four edge midpoints, and the center tile. These tiles belong to two words at once. If an intersection tile is green, that letter is locked in for both words. If it's yellow, the letter is in the right word but the wrong position. Intersections give you the most information per tile, so read them carefully. The highlighted tiles below are all intersection positions:
Start with confident swaps
Tap one tile, then tap another to swap them. After each swap, both tiles update their colors immediately. Look for cases where you can see exactly where a letter should go. A gray tile in one word that matches a missing letter in another word is a strong candidate. The highlighted pair below shows two tiles about to be swapped:
Work outward from solved letters
As more tiles turn green, the remaining letters in each word get easier to place. A five-letter word with four green tiles and one gap has only one possible answer. Use the greens you've earned to narrow down the unknowns in neighboring words.
Count your remaining swaps
You start with 15 swaps. Each swap you use costs nothing until you pass 10 - after that, every extra swap reduces your star rating. Keep an eye on the counter. If you're near the limit with several unsolved tiles, stop and plan your remaining moves instead of swapping randomly. When every tile is green, the puzzle is complete:
Common mistakes
Moving green tiles
Green means done. If you swap a green tile away from its position, it will lose its green status. Never move a green tile unless you realize the grid has a duplicate letter situation (rare).
Ignoring gray tiles
Gray tiles tell your where a letter does NOT belong. That's useful information. If a gray G sits in a row that reads _O_ER, that G belongs in a different word. Think about which other word on the grid needs a G.
Swapping without a plan
Random swaps burn through your 15-swap budget fast. Each swap should make at least one tile closer to green. If you're not sure a swap will help, hold off and look at the board again.
Star scoring
You earn stars based on how many swaps you have left when you finish. The puzzle needs a minimum of 10 swaps to solve. Each unused swap beyond that earns a star, up to 5. So 10 swaps = 5 stars, 11 = 4, 12 = 3, 13 = 2, 14 = 1, and 15 = 0 stars. You still solved it at 0 stars - you just used every swap available.
Tips for better scores
- Scan the full board before your first swap. Rushing in wastes moves on things you'd have noticed with a quick look.
- Solve intersection tiles first. One correct intersection locks in a letter for two words at once.
- If a word has four green tiles and one gap, leave it for later. That last letter is obvious once you've solved other words.
- Gray tiles are clues in disguise. A gray letter in row 1 might be the missing piece in row 3.
- Say partially solved words out loud. Your brain fills in word patterns faster when you hear them.
