Waffle is a word puzzle played on a 5×5 grid shaped like a waffle. Six words interlock across the grid - three horizontal, three vertical. The letters are scrambled when you start. Your job is to swap them into the right positions until every word reads correctly. The format was created by James Robinson in January 2022, shortly after Wordle went viral. Where Wordle gives you six guesses at a single word, Waffle shows all 21 letters upfront and asks you to rearrange them.
Each letter tile is color-coded from the start. Green means the letter is already where it belongs. Yellow means the letter is part of this word but sitting in the wrong spot. Gray means the letter needs to move to a different word entirely. You get 15 swaps to solve the whole puzzle.
Tap any letter tile to select it, then tap a second tile to swap their positions. Every swap counts, and the colors update immediately to reflect the new arrangement. You can only swap tiles that are in letter positions - the four holes in the waffle shape are just empty space.
Start with green tiles. They're already correct, so build outward from them. Yellow tiles tell you a letter belongs in the current word but not in that position. If you see the same letter showing yellow in a row and green in a column (or vice versa), that intersection tile is your best clue.
Gray tiles are the trickiest. They belong somewhere on the grid, just not in the word where they currently sit. Look at the crossing word to figure out where they actually go.
The puzzle resets daily at midnight UTC. Everyone gets the same grid, same letters, same solution. Solving it in fewer swaps earns more stars (up to 5).
Pay attention to intersection tiles first. In the 5×5 waffle grid, 9 of the 21 tiles are intersections - positions where a horizontal word crosses a vertical word. Each intersection gives you information about two words at once. If an intersection tile is green, that letter is locked in for both words. If it's yellow, you know it belongs in one of those two words but not at that spot.
Count your swaps before you start moving. You get 15, and a perfect solve takes 10. That gives you a 5-swap buffer. Statistically, players who plan their first 3-4 moves before touching the grid earn an average of 1.2 more stars than those who start swapping immediately.
When you're stuck, read the partially solved words out loud. Your brain recognizes word patterns faster when you hear them. A row showing _A_ER is obviously WATER or LATER or PAPER. Narrow it down using the letters available on the grid.
